And I always figured it was (appropriately enough) pronounced "oh yuck".Domino Writinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01460077874043823789noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8038823840472916624.post-80542122030633643382011-01-05T04:07:55.812-05:002011-01-05T04:07:55.812-05:00This is the good thoughtful analysis we (meaning y...This is the good thoughtful analysis we (meaning you and I, Carter) have come to expect from Mr. Junkal. I'd love to see a Postmodern Myth installment here; I'll pressure him subtly from here.

The other angle I wonder about is that MM has both the Otyugh and Neo-Otyugh, each fully fledged, apparently. Given the ~4 month gap between Star Wars and MM, if the Dianoga is the inspiration for the Otyugh, that means that Gygax or somebody conceived of the Otyugh and then ramped it up to Neo-Otyugh in a short time. And presumably they played them both in campaigns and found they each were cool enough to go into the MM in that time. I'm not saying they couldn't have evaluated the creatures in play-testing in that short time, but it does compress the amount of time for two substantially different creatures to be created and vetted between Star Wars and MM.

[And also I wonder if the name is simply an anagram for "Toughy", or "Tough", reflecting the low armor class, where the "y" might be a a superfluous touch. Of course another less compelling anagram is "Hugtoy". Or the interrogative text message "Y U Goth?"].

Egads,
Schpawn.Spawn of Endrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10431848914619887998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8038823840472916624.post-89752465350017743272011-01-04T19:51:12.828-05:002011-01-04T19:51:12.828-05:00Thanks for the comments, all credit is due to Uncl...Thanks for the comments, all credit is due to Uncle Junkal's player -- maybe I can persuade him to write a regular "Postmodern Mythology" feature for the blog.Carter Soleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01286436801953647693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8038823840472916624.post-50439757231581768632011-01-04T10:51:52.819-05:002011-01-04T10:51:52.819-05:00Very fascinating, I've often wondered on these...Very fascinating, I've often wondered on these things. I think it is plausible considering things like rust monsters and the like came from Gary finding strange creatures in bags of plastic dinosaurs and statted them out. I'm sure there are more than a few off the cuff monsters in the Monster Manual.Xyanthonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07902260753434100101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8038823840472916624.post-44241873370832800572011-01-04T00:30:37.346-05:002011-01-04T00:30:37.346-05:00I posted on Dragonsfoot (http://www.dragonsfoot.or...I posted on Dragonsfoot (http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=47127&p=1011460#p1011460) asking if any of the first-generation TSR folks can give us any further information on the origins of the otyugh. It's a longshot, though; I suspect your guess is likely to remain the definitive one.
