In a great review of the 4e Player's Handbook NiTessine comments that:
"4E is a distraction for the board game night, not something to run campaigns with."
to which Marcus adds:
"I have no wish to foul my hands or my hobby with this filth."

Yabbut... if I was DMing it... I still think there is nothing wrong with 4e. There are far more rules to fiddle around with, but you can pretty much ignore all the rules outside of combat, and inside of combat I think 4e does an excellent job of making the actual hack and slash part of the game fun. Of course, I am a bit of an odd duck in that I love the freedom of rules light systems and I also love the tactical thinking associated with 4e combat. Of course, I love chess as well.
ReplyDeleteActually, I agree -- I think 4e handles combat and tactics especially well, certainly an improvement over 3.0 / 3.5. But like you, I prefer the flexibility of OD&D / 1e to anything else. I am probably not as vitriolic against 4e as these posts would suggest, but I have no great love for it either.
